The Graphic Design Cook Book

My first attempt at the typographic cake was an Eccentric Std 'R', which turned out to look like a massive pile of... well you know what. So tables were kick and words were exchanged with the fate of my luck and I proceeded to sulk for the rest of the evening.
I woke up the next day with sheer determination and a new typeface in mind Lucida Fax and the letter 'H'. I made a cardboard stencil and covered it in tin foil. To make this beautiful creation please refer to my wonderful recipe and cookbook.

The Perfect Crime

This is what happens when you leave your room unlocked Reece Reilly!! One fateful afternoon my buddy and flat mate Reece left his bedroom door unlocked whilst he went out for the day. So obviously we thought it would be a beyond brilliant idea to walk to asda and buy 6 rolls of tin foil to cover every thing possible in his room, from his pens, to his desk chair to his bed and books etc.
Here's my illustration of what happened (coming soon in colour).

Wing Of a Bee

Project wing of a bee was to represent us as graphic designers, we produced butterfly wings as appose to a bee wing to represent how fragile we are at the new beginnings of hopefully a long career in the industry. We had to come up with a theme anything we wanted. Usually I don't base my work around religion as it's a controversial subject and one I often never agree with, however after my visit to Thailand I felt the Buddhist way was something a bit different; before described as a way of life. I also the week prior to this project visited the V&A where I saw a beautiful golden Buddha head, which is where I got the inspiration for my butterfly wing.

100 New Uses For A Brick

This was a project all about idea generation and honestly at first it was a bit of a struggle. But in desperation you come up with more and more silly ideas. Idea's start to flow after a bit of tugging and pulling.

Top Trumps

Matchmatcher

This was a live brief for the clothing company matches, they're hosting big gift boxes in the shop windows for the Christmas period. However they weren't particularly keen/fussed whether it was christmas themed or not. So I decided to go for something illustrative and simple that promoted the name of the company but that was also aesthetically pleasing and playful. I felt the brown paper fitted with the current craze of authenticity and looking a bit vintage.

Pay to play

This is a new £1 coin to reflect the current economic climate. One side shows the city of London burning down whilst the other shows the queen decaying into a skeleton which reads "God Save The Queen".

40 Places

We met in London for the day and had a sheet given to us of 40 different things to do around the centre of London. I then had to produce a map to show all the things I did that day.

Brand Me Up Buttercup

This is a piece of branding to represent Sam Strudwick, who is a complex human being who has many interests. I found some of his likes and dislikes to be quite conflicting as Sam is in his own words is "a bit of a health freak"; when it comes to food he won't eat it unless he knows exactly where its come from and whose touched it (so don't expect him to take you out on a date to some fancy restaurant). Although Sam also said he smokes (not so healthy). He also told me that he's a bit of a nightmare when it comes to being on time (don't expect him to turn up on time to your date either). Amongst other things about Sam I found him to be a very lovely individual and I ended up with this as his piece of branding. The tomatoes represent him being a health freak and the clock face replaces and yet becomes part of the fruit with wonky arms to show that he's not the best of time keepers.

Stairway to Helvetica: Rockwell

Oh Rockwell Rockwell,
How was I supposed to know,
That you're a serif typeface,
Oh Rockwell Rockwell,
I should have let you know
your 'O' is not an eclipse,

Show me your rounded letterform,
Tell me Rockwell,
'Cause I need your geo-form

Your semi-structure
Is killing me ( and I)
I must confess your honesty,
When I don't use you I loose my mind,
Give me your type
Hit me Rockwell one more time.

So in groups we were given a specific font to make a song about which we then had to perform to the whole class. I felt that it would be easiest to do a parody of a song that already exists and just insert information about the typeface.
After our beautifully sung performance it was sprung upon us to produce a music video for our song too. This video is a narrative of a troubled love story between and girl and guy called Rockwell.

Hi my name is...

Sophie Osborne. This is a sheet from my first graphics lesson where we had to quickly think about our likes and dislikes and show them in the appropriate boxes.
